Based on a visual novel of the same name, Steins;Gate is the story of self-proclaimed “Mad Scientist” Rintaro Okabe who invents a time travelling device using a cell phone, a microwave, and a Jell-O bananas.
In his “Future Gadget Lab,” Okabe and his fellow lab members use the Phone-Microwave (name subject to change) to alter the past and create alternate versions of the present. They also can transform bananas into Jell-O as an odd side effect… These alterations catch the attention of the scientific organization SERN and the battle for the monopoly of time travel begins!
At first, Okabe decides to test his power with to benefit himself and his Lab. The first experiment consists of sending the winning lottery numbers to the lab members of the past. After subsequent experiments using the “D-Mails” (short for Delorean Mails, as an homage to Back to the Future), Okabe discovers that each time he alters the past, the present becomes more dangerous for himself and his friends. SERN is on Okabe’s trail and the lab members meet horrible ends at the hands of their evil organization.
Okabe needs to figure out how to save his friends and escape the clutches of SERN before they start Wold War III and the dystopia descends upon them all.
This series was quite the ride. It did not appeal to me right off the bat, but as the story evolved, it became one of my favorites of this season. The delusions of Okabe and the antics of the quirky lab members became funny and endearing. As their friendship devoted to science and its geeky culture grew, my fondness for the “Future Gadget Lab” members grew as well.
